Dumpster diving husband gets national attention

The simple, sweet local Valentine's Day story about the Torrington man who jumped into a Dumpster behind the Goshen Congregational Church and rummaged through garbage bags until he found his wife's lost wedding and engagement rings continues to get national attention.
The story (CLICK HERE if you missed it) has been read more than 20,000 times at www.registercitizen.com, and on Monday, producers with ABC's Good Morning America show called The Register Citizen to inquire about it.

Penguin Plunge photos available online

You see local photos in The Register Citizen every day, but did you know that often our staff takes dozens more at a local sporting event or other activity that don't make it into the paper?
Most are available online at http://registercitizen.mycapture.com, where you can order glossy reprints in all sizes, or turn them into gifts such as personalized coffee mugs or T-shirts.
A great example of this is the annual Winsted Penguin Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics.
If you or a friend or family member were brave enough or crazy enough to do this, you'll want something to remember it by.
CLICK HERE to see if our photographers caught your plunge. Eighty photos are posted from the event.

Why we welcome anonymous comments
The addition of Sound Off to The Register Citizen’s opinion pages last year has been one of the most popular, and at the same time, controversial, moves this newspaper has made in recent memory. And the redesign and re-launch of www.registercitizen.com in November, with the ability to comment instantly on that day’s Sound Off items, as well as any other story of the day, created a massive online community meeting place and debate forum almost overnight.

Newspaper Valentines - For Your Human Sweethearts or Animal Sweethearts

With Valentine's Day approaching, The Register Citizen will be publishing Valentine's Greetings, where you can surprise your sweetheart with a photo and message in the newspaper.
And this year, you can also publish a Valentine's Greeting for your pet!
The cost is just $10. See ads in the print edition of The Register Citizen, or call 489-5555 for more information.

Regional AP chief to speak in Torrington

Ever wonder how all of the news from around the nation and world, from war in Afghanistan to the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay tonight, gets covered, edited and packaged into your local newspaper the next morning and up-to-the-minute on the Web?
David Marcus, head of the Associated Press for Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island will speak on this, as well as the major changes facing the news cooperative, at the Torrington Rotary Club meeting at noon Tuesday, March 3.
For more information about the club, visit www.torringtonrotary.org.

Diaper Drive honored by newspaper association

The Northwest Connecticut Diaper Drive, a joint project of The Register Citizen and United Way of Northwest Connecticut launched over the summer, has been honored with an honorable mention for Best Community Service Project by Suburban Newspapers of America.
With the help of Shaw's Supermarket in Canton, the effort raised enough money to distribute more than 60,000 to local food banks and social service agencies, including FISH, the Salvation Army and the Susan B. Anthony Project women's shelter.
